Applause

The programs of East L.A. Classic Theatre have been far reaching and have touched many lives throughout Los Angeles and the surrounding communities. The following is a sample of testimonies from students, school faculty and administrators:

“Drama is a component of literature I am expected to teach (state standards require it).  Reading a play in a textbook can never compare to seeing a play live, on a stage in a theater.  Few parents, in this economic climate, can afford to take children to theaters – and there are precious few children’s productions appropriate for the young…The fact is that, without an organization like East L.A. Classic Theatre, children like my students would never experience living drama.”
- Mary Bennett, 7th Grade Teacher, Baldwin School

“I learned to have more confidence in myself. Before I used to be shy, now I’m not shy anymore.  I learned how to make eye contact and be focused. I learned to trust my peers. I learned to have more commitment. I learned to take chances; I really enjoyed this program.”
- Priscilla, 5th Grade Student, Stevenson Elementary School in Long Beach

“Students who participated which are lower ELD levels (i.e. level 1, 2, or 3) seem to test better or move on to a higher level of ESL classes.  This class has given them the opportunity to practice their writing and speaking in public.”
- Cecilia Palencia, ELA Counselor, Chester W. Nimitz Middle School

“I never liked acting and when they told us about the Beyond Borders program, I said to myself this is going to suck.  Then, after the first 3 weeks, I started to like it.  Now I am excited to perform in front of all our parents.”
- Jeremy, 5th Grade Student, Garcia Elementary School in Colton

“Thank you for contributing so positively to our academic program. Your efforts are extremely appreciated as you offer an excellent program. The actors were awesome!”
- Frank Serrrato, Vice Principal, Selma Elementary School

“Thank you for pushing me to try harder. I never knew that I can act out a play and memorize a script.  Thank you for making me the person that I really am. Thank you so much!!”
- Sophia, 4th Grade Student, Dean L. Shively School in South El Monte

“Our school is rich in its diversity of culture and language; English Language Learners make up 70% of our population here. These students come to us with a variety of talents, skills and needs and it is up to us to encourage, support and nurture them so that they may have a future of real promise and possibilities.  East L.A. Classic Theatre is a critical partner with us in helping to meet these needs.”
- Eugene L. Hernandez, Principal, Frank Del Olmo Elementary School

“I think this intersession was a good and fun way to learn English and it is going to help us in our careers some day.”
- Amari, 7th Grade, Elizabeth Learning Center

“The students’ study of English is enriched by their study of the arts and culture of America and their countries of origin from around the world.  We thank everyone involved for allowing us to be a part of this program now, and we hope to continue in the years to come.”
-
Wendy S. Bernstein, Assistant Principal, Berendo Middle School

“I would like to encourage anyone who is considering East L.A. Classic Theatre as a partner in education, to do so without hesitation.  ECT has proven to be committed to the academic, personal and social success of our students.”
- Florentino Jauregui, English Language Coordinator, Hollywood High School
